Lambert Spaanenburg is full professor in the Department
of Computing Science of the University of
Groningen.
He graduated in Electrical Engineering in 1972 at the Technical University of Delft with as subject the "Design Automation of Asynchronous Sequential Machines".
After an obligatory stay with the Royal Dutch Navy, he went to teach and research microelectronic system design at
Twente University. In 1986 he spent a sabbatical leave on Open CAD Frameworks with the VENUS group of Siemens Central Research Laboratories.
This and other work is reported in the Ph.D.thesis
titled ``Structured Design of Digital Integrated Systems with Distributed Control''.
In 1988 Spaanenburg accepted new responsibilities at the Institute for Microelectronics Stuttgart (IMS) in Stuttgart (Germany). Under his direction the Signal Processing Department developed several innovations in testable VLSI system design,
such as the neural controler that autonomously drove the Mercedes OSCAR on a German Highway in september 1991. In 1993 Spaanenburg accepted a call for the new Chair in Technical Computing Science at Groningen University, where he is employed since then.
Spaanenburg has researched and consulted for some 40 (inter)national companies. He has published more than 160 refereed papers and book contributions and holds 5 patents.
Current research interests are in the fields of
Computational Intelligence, Embedded Systems and Net-centric Design.
